The SAP basis is often perceived as a brake within projects or when introducing new technologies. This is partly due to the late consultation of the SAP basis on the issues of technical feasibility as well as the integration of new technologies and applications into the existing system landscape. By implementing the recommendations, the SAP basis is repositioning itself in parts within the IT organisation. The SAP basis has a clearly defined self-understanding (inward-looking perception) as well as a clear positioning and a defined task area within the IT organisation (outward-facing perception), as shown in Figure 5. By integrating the SAP basis into the development of the IT strategy, the digitisation strategy and a clear communication with the CIO, the SAP basis has the opportunity to deal with technologies and topics at an early stage. As a result, the SAP basis is prepared for requests from business units or other IT departments and has the opportunity to approach them proactively. The SAP basis is supported by an IT service and IT product catalogue, which describes the scope of the SAP basis. For internal communication and communication with external service providers, as well as other suppliers, outsourcing partners or outsourcing partners and cloud service providers, there are up-to-date and meaningful documentation and process descriptions. For the control, measurement and monitoring of external partners, Service Level Agreements and meaningful key figures are also available.
Understanding the structure and functionality of the system is especially important for IT administration. It's not for nothing that "SAP Basis Administrator" is a career field in its own right. Instead of data and application development, the focus here is on providing the software environment on which the company's tools are created. SAP Basis is therefore comparable to the server and platform infrastructure and its administration in companies - as distinct from application and web development.

The definition, organisational structure as well as the naming of the SAP basis is historically conditioned by previous SAP software versions and components. This also results in the perception of the SAP basis and the related focus of the SAP NetWeaver and the ABAP system core, which is still widely used today. However, the scope of activities has changed significantly in terms of tasks and technology and will continue to change in view of SAP's perspective and product strategy and the changing roles of IT. In order to accommodate this change and to change perceptions both in the overall context of the SAP ecosystem and within its own company, the SAP basis must develop a new self-understanding and establish a marketing for the publication of its own performance. It should be mentioned here that it only makes sense to access the tables by reading the SELECT statement to get a quick view of the results. Using the DBACOCKPIT, it is not possible to create entire table structures using Create Table. For such applications, SAP provides other, better options. Another important point is that once a user has the necessary permissions to use the transaction DBACOCKPIT, it can potentially (with appropriate permissions on the tables) access the entire SAP system. For example, a query can be used to read the entire user table. Therefore, the transaction should always be treated with caution and only awarded to administrators. DBACOCKPIT handles the call control permissions similar to the SE16 / SE16N transaction. When the table is called, the S_TABU_DIS or S_TABU_NAM permission object is checked with a specific activity. This means that only the tables or table permission groups for which the corresponding values in the aforementioned permission objects are assigned can be accessed. In addition, you can save SQL statements that you run once, and run them again at any time to recognise changes in the result set without having to reformulate the SQL statement each time. The editor also allows you to start the query for SQL statements in the background. The result is obtained by calling the transaction SM37, in which the result is output in a spool file.
