Change and Release Management
Basis is a set of programs and tools that interface with databases, operating systems, communication protocols, and business applications (such as FI, CO, MM, etc). The full form of BASIS is "Business Application Software Integrated Solution".
SAP Basis is also known as module BC or application Basis. In this context, SAP Basis refers to all transactions, programs and objects that control the functions of the overall system. This includes, among other things, user and authorization management as well as the configuration of interfaces via RFC.
Furthermore, the DISPLAY system variable must be set in order to start the TREX admin tool. Details and a guide to installing the tool can be found here: instguides → SAP NetWeaver → Released 04 → Installation → Cross-NW → Installation Guide Search and Classification TREX.
Mentioning the SUM tool leads us to another part of SAP Basis: system updates and upgrades. Since SAP software receives updates from SAP at regular intervals - in the case of R/3 in the form of SPS (Support Package Stacks) and in the case of S/4HANA in the form of FPS (Feature Pack Stacks) - a large part of an SAP Basis administrator's job is to import these packages into the SAP system.
Tools such as "Shortcut for SAP Systems" complement missing functions in the SAP basis area.
This includes the continuous monitoring and allocation of access possibilities as well as the systematic securing of functional separation (SoD - Segregation of Duties) in the IT systems.
Rethinking the Permission Concept With the introduction of an Identity Management System and a workflow for permission granting, the existing roles should be scrutinised once again.
